Google is working with ASUS, Lenovo, and Acer to introduce new gaming-focused laptops built for the cloud. In the blog post, Google announced three new Chromebooks, the Acer Chromebook 516 GE, the ASUS Chromebook Vibe CX55 Flip, and the Ideapad Gaming Chromebook by Lenovo. The first wave of Chromebooks for gaming will place heavy emphasis on cloud gaming services such as Google Stadia and Nvidias GeForce Now. That is starting to change over the past few years, and cloud gaming services like Google Stadia and GeForce Now are turning Chromebooks into impressively efficient gaming machines. Chromebook owners now have the ability to play games as well as PC users thanks to GeForce Now, a free cloud gaming service from Nvidia.
In addition, a GeForce NOW app will be pre-installed on gaming Chromebooks. Google has also worked with Microsoft to bring Xbox Cloud Gaming (beta) to Chromebooks via a web application. On this note, Google Stadia - it is going to be the app that is pinnable to Games Chromebooks as well. It will also provide an alternative to Stadia, Googles expensive cloud-gaming service, that Chromebooks will support as well. On a side note, we have previously reported that the ChromeOS launcher would bring up games available for play via services such as Google Stadia - and, apparently, Nvidias GeForce Now.
Unfortunately, it looks like for now, we are only seeing little icons with text appearing under a "Games" category within the new "Productivity" launcher. We went from bare-bones Android games in 2015 to an array of gaming options on Chromebooks, even without Stadia, in a few short years. Google is working on providing keyboard controls for Android apps on ChromeOS, making Android apps even more of a viable gaming option on a Chromebook without Stadia. There are a number of great Android game apps that work on a Chromebook alone.
Since most Chromebooks can run Android, you will also be able to play games designed for smartphones and tablets. There are still cloud gaming options that will play nice with this Lenovo IdeaPad Chromebook, like GeForce Now and Amazon Luna. The balance is going to shift more thanks to Steam games being available on higher-end Chromebooks. The streaming service allows for the playing of high-end games which cannot otherwise be played on a normal computer.
Now that you have a basic idea about how these programs work, let us take a look at the 5 best streaming platforms for video games. With Google organizing the library of game streaming services in a single, central, searchable place, selecting titles should be easy. Finding a game to play should be easier now that Google has organized all your streaming service libraries into one searchable place. Even if you do have a specific game in mind, you have to check with every service to see if it is available.
One memo explained it would come in the form of a list of cloud platforms - such as Nvidias GeForce Now, Xbox Game Pass Ultimate, and, of course, Stadia - that the game is available for, shown alongside a search result for that game.
